Indian boxer Sumit Sangwan is just one win away from securing a ticket to Rio. Pugilist Sangwan remained on course for securing his berth for the Rio Olympics after entering the quarterfinals of the AIBA World Olympic Qualification tournament in the men’s light heavyweight (81kg) category in Baku on Tuesday.
Sangwan showed his might against Mongolian opponent Erdenebayar Sandagsuren, posting a easy win (3-0) in the pre-quarterfinal round.
If Sangwan wins the next round, he will gain a spot for the Rio Olympics that starts on August 5.
At the 2012 London Olympics, he participated in the light heavyweight category. Under controversial circumstances, he lost his bout to Yamaguchi Falcao Florentino.
Similarly, Commonwealth Games gold-medallist Manoj Kumar (64kg) stood just one win away from making the cut for Rio. Manoj beat Bulgaria’s Ismetov Ayrin Smetov 2-1.
