 Dipa Karmakar

India’s first woman gymnast to make it to the Olympics, Dipa Karmakar had another feather added to her cap ahead of her campaign in the upcoming Rio Olympics when she was named a ‘Gymnaste de Classe Mondaile’ (World Class Gymnast) by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG).

Dipa, who is in the final stages of her preparation for the Olympics under the supervision of her coach Bisweshwar Nandi, has received the official letter confirming the distinction from the FIG. It carries a special golden badge, which the 22-year-old will be carrying during the Olympics. Mumbai-based Gymnastics Federation of India received an airmail recently from the Federation de Internationale de Gymnastique secretary general Andre Gueisbuhler informing them of the ‘Gymnaste de classe Mondiale’ distinction bestowed on Dipa.

FIG decided to honor her following her performance in the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships held last year. Dipa finished fifth in her favorite vault event in Glasgow before bettering her performance in an event in Rio in April this year to ensure the Olympic berth.
