Storm and super typhoon may bring rain and wind to HK
Super typhoon Mangkhut may get to Hong Kong this weekend after crossing the Philippines
Hong Kong and surrounding areas are bracing for bad weather this week, with one storm expected to hit the coast of western Guangdong on Wednesday night and a super typhoon due on the weekend.
The Hong Kong Observatory issued the Number 1 storm alert signal at 10:40am on Tuesday.
At 3pm on Tuesday, tropical storm Barijat was estimated to be about 430 kilometers east-southeast of Hong Kong and was forecast to move west at about 12 kilometers per hour in the general direction of the coast of western Guangdong, the weather forecaster said.
According to the present forecast track, its showers will maintain a distance from Hong Kong and local winds will not strengthen significantly on Tuesday. A higher signal is not be expected later on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, super typhoon Mangkhut may well head to Hong Kong this weekend. Located near Guam on Tuesday, Mangkhut was heading towards the northern Philippines and was forecast to bring winds of more than 250 kilometers per hour as it approached Luzon, Radio Television Hong Kong reported.
The super typhoon will intensify in the next few days and a high level typhoon signal may be hoisted.
On Sunday the weather will be cloudy to overcast with frequent heavy rain with squalls and thunder-storms, the Observatory forecast, adding that seas will be rough with big swells.
