Student stressed by work jumps to death in Yau Ma Tei
Lam was a student of nursing at the HKU School of Professional and Continuing Education and also worked part-time to subsidize his tuition fees
A 21-year-old student has taken his own life by jumping from the roof of a 23-story building in Kowloon’s Yau Ma Tei in the early hours on Monday.
The man, surnamed Lam, was a student of nursing at the HKU School of Professional and Continuing Education (HKU Space). He also worked part-time to help pay his tuition fees.
A 64-year-old resident of Cheong Wai Building on Portland Street in Yau Ma Tai reported to police at 3am that a man was found lying on a platform on the third floor, Oriental Daily reported.
The student was pronounced dead at the scene.
It was understood that Lam was a volunteer for the Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions and that he went to the union’s office on the third floor on Sunday to do voluntary work.
Police found a suicide note in the office. Lam said he had been under pressure from study and work, Sing Pao reported. Officers found no evidence of foul play.
