Supreme Court allows 13-year-old rape victim to get abortion
Bench took into account girl's age and the trauma she has endured
India’s Supreme Court on Wednesday granted a 13-year-old Mumbai rape victim permission to terminate her 32-week pregnancy, according to media reports.
The Class 7 student was allegedly raped by her father’s colleagues, who have been arrested, media reports said. The incident came to light when the victim’s parents noticed that her stomach was bloated and took her to a doctor. An ultrasound test revealed that she was pregnant.
A Supreme Court bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices Amitava Roy and AM Khanwilkar reviewed a medical report filed by a board of doctors set up by the court at JJ hospital and granted permission for termination.
In his order, the Misra said, “Keeping in view the age of the victim, the trauma she faced, we allow her to terminate her pregnancy.”
