Supreme Court to hear deportation challenge
Rohingya Muslim refugees fled violence in Myanmar's volatile Rakhine state
The Indian Supreme Court on Monday fixed September 18 for hearing a plea challenging New Delhi’s decision to deport illegal Rohingya Muslim immigrants to Myanmar, according to media reports.
The plea, filed by two Rohingya immigrants, Mohammad Salimullah and Mohammad Shaqir, who are registered refugees under the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), claimed they had taken refuge in India after escaping from discrimination and violence against their community in Myanmar.
The violent attacks, allegedly carried out by Myanmar’s security forces, have led to an exodus of Rohingya tribal people from the country’s western Rakhine state to India and Bangladesh.
