Sweeper who was paid Rs2 a day for 17 years seeks justice
Part-time worker asks Madras High Court to upgrade his employment status
A man who has worked for the Tamil Nadu animal husbandry department as a part-time sweeper for the last 17 years for the meager sum of Rs2 per day has asked the Madras High Court to “regularize” his employment status.
PTI reported that since July 20, 2000, M Ravikumar has been working as a part-time sweeper for a salary of Rs2 per day at the the sub-centre of the department in Vellodu in Erode District. He expected his services to be regularized after two years but that did not happen. The department issued a notification to fill vacancies for the post of assistants but his case was not considered, he claimed.
Admitting the petition, Justice M Govindaraju ordered status quo on proceedings, which bars anyone from taking any action until the matter can be heard by the court, after examining an April 19 communication from the director of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services calling for interviews for assistant posts in the department.
