Taichung’s ASEAN Square is migrants’ ‘second home’
The city government hosts activities for migrants during festivals that are celebrated in Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines and Thailand
The 13-story ASEAN Square complex in Taichung, Taiwan, is considered a second home by many migrants, and its average monthly business turnover exceeds NT$100 million (US$3.34 million), according to the city government.
The “Big Sunday” sales explosion was recorded on the second Sunday of the month, which was also known to be payday for most migrant workers in the city, the United Daily News reported.
Migrant workers from neighboring counties such as Miaoli and Changhua would also come to the renowned shopping hub to buy clothes and digital devices such as computers, communication devices and various consumer electronics products.
The Economic Development Bureau of the city government also hosts activities during festivals that are celebrated in Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines and Thailand, making migrants feel at home in Taiwan.
The upcoming big event will be Eid al-Fitr, the Muslim feast in June marking the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting that began this week.
A Vietnamese worker told the reporter that every weekend she would visit ASEAN Square to meet compatriots and make new friends, and she found it convenient to go shopping there and ship gifts back home.
