The eastern coast of northern Australia is ringed by tropical forests. Satellite data from the University of Maryland indicate the region shown lost around 4% of its remaining tree cover between 2001 and 2015. Of the two known locations with viable northern bettong populations, imagery from Google Earth shows one is sandwiched between the city of Cairns and an agricultural area.
