US may block Chinese investment in AI
Trump administration reviewing ways to counter China's "predatory practices"
The US is looking at ways to strengthen the role the Committee on Foreign Investment in the US (CFIUS) plays reviewing Chinese investment in US technology.
The heightened scrutiny would target investment in Silicon Valley, particularly that which is related to artificial intelligence and machine learning. Reuters reports that an unreleased Pentagon report warns China is gaining access to the sensitive technology through joint ventures, minority stakes and early-stage investment in start-ups.
“We’re examining CFIUS to look at the long-term health and security of the U.S. economy, given China’s predatory practices” in technology, a Trump administration official not authorized to speak publicly was quoted by Reuters as saying.
