WeChat launches first pop-up store in Shanghai
China's leading messaging app teams up with 300 merchants to help develop short-term 'flash retailing' outlets
WeChat, China’s leading messaging app, has launched its first cashier-less pop-up store in Shanghai, Yicai.com reported.
The company, developed by Tencent, has teamed up with more than 300 merchants, including EasyGo and EllE, as well as shopping mall The Mixc to build up its first pop-up store, also known as flash retailing. The latter is part of a new trend in short-term sales spaces.
By scanning the QR code via WeChat app, customers can walk into the store. At the same time, the system will verify the customer’s identification and get access to their digital wallet WeChat Pay.
All the products in the store have RFID tags, using chips to mark all the information, including the price of goods. After the purchasing, buyers can easily check the bill by scanning codes.
Bai Zhenjie, the company leader in applying WeChat Pay to the retail industry, said the concept of flash retailing is constantly being polished. Face recognition technology and a credit evaluation system are expected to also be applied to the stores.
