‘Witch’ tortured and killed
Police charge four relatives with murder in Rajasthan's Ajmer district
The torture and murder of a 40-year-old widow, who was allegedly called a witch and forced to eat to feces by her relatives, came to light on Monday, after her daughter went to police in Rajasthan’s Ajmer district, according to media sources. Police said her relatives murdered her on August 2 and cremated her, destroying crucial evidence.
Ajmer Police Superintendent Rajendra Singh said, “Kanya Devi Raigar was branded a witch and severely tortured before being beaten to death. Her relatives forced her to eat feces.” Her 15-year-old son was reportedly the sole witness.
A police officer told PTI, “I had received the complaint on August 10 from a relative, but we could not file a First Information Report as the complainant was not a close relative of the deceased.”
Police arrested four suspects, including two teenage girls. Cases were filed against Pinky Raigar, Sonia Raigar, Mahaveer Raigar and Chandra Prakash Raigar under Sections 302 (murder), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) and provisions of the Rajasthan Prevention of Witch-Hunting Act, 2015.
