Woman jailed 8 years for robbing jewelry shop with air gun
The 55-year-old, who had a history of mental illness, pleaded guilty to robbery after she fired twice at a retail worker in Yau Ma Tei
A 55-year-old woman with a history of mental illness was jailed eight years on Thursday after admitting she shot and injured a jewelry shop worker with an air gun in a Hong Kong district last year.
The woman surnamed Chan, who was charged with robbery, pleaded guilty in the High Court.
On August 30, Chan asked for an HK$8,500 (US$1,094) refund from a jewelry shop on Temple Street, Yau Ma Tei, because she was dissatisfied with a diamond ring she had purchased, Sing Tao Daily reported.
But her request was rejected and Chan sold the ring elsewhere for HK$1,000. She then bought an air gun and returned to the Yau Ma Tei shop and fired twice at a salesman, whose right arm was injured with the first shot. The woman then left with two diamond rings, Apple Daily reported.
After her arrest later that day, she told the police that she had lost one of the rings and pawned the other for HK$800 to cover the cost of buying the air gun.
The judge said society should not tolerate the use of weapons in any situation and sentenced the woman to jail for eight years.
