Woman nabbed for allegedly scamming worker into buying condo
Filipino woman is accused of pretended to be an employee of a senator and forging letters of authorisation
A Filipino woman has been arrested for allegedly posing as an employee of a senator and tricking a Filipino migrant worker into buying a condominium unit.
The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) said Lana dela Cruz was arrested on August 31 for posing as an employee of Senator Cynthia Villar and maintained she was authorised to sell units at Royal Palm Villa in Las Piñas City, GMA News reported.
Dela Cruz allegedly sold a condominium unit to Milton Navelgas, 67, who is a tugboat crewman in Guam. He paid dela Cruz a downpayment of PHP350,000 (US$6,534) for a unit.
According to Navelgas’ granddaughter, dela Cruz forged authortisation letters from the senator and impersonated her voice in a phone call, The Filipino Times reported.
The NBI said dela Cruz was charged with estafa, a criminal offence where a person defrauds another.
“Moreover, Royal Palm Villa is not owned by the Villar family and the signature of Sen. Villar appearing in the authorisation letter given to the complainant is not the signature of Sen. Villar,” the NBI said.
