Afghan vote count underway

Ballot boxes from Afghanistan's 34 provinces are being transferred to the capital Kabul for final counting in the wake of the country's presidential election on April 5.

Election Commission spokesman Mohammad Noor said on April 6 that the process of final counting was starting that day, beginning with ballots from nearby polling stations and continuing as ballots arrive from more distant points in the days ahead.

A first counting of the ballots is taking place locally in polling



stations before the ballots are sent to Kabul for the final tally.

According to Noor, it could take up to a week to receive ballots from remote areas. Preliminary results from the nationwide election are not expected to be announced until April 24.

One truck carrying full ballot boxes in northern Afghanistan was struck by a roadside bomb on April 6, killing three people and destroying eight boxes of votes. More ...
