China-India trade to exceed US$13b in 2004

BEIJING - India-China bilateral trade has zoomed to over US$12 billion during the first 11 months of 2004, much higher than the targeted $10 billion, according to latest Chinese customs figures.

The bilateral trade during the January-November period amounted to $12.16 billion, up 82.7% over the same period last year, according to figures released on Tuesday.

Indian exports to China surged to $6.93 billion, up 87.4% during the first 11 months, according to the figures. At the same time, Chinese exports to India totaled $5.23 billion, up 76.6% over the corresponding period last year.

Since bilateral trade during each month in 2004 has amounted to nearly $1 billion, the total trade during the year is expected to be around $13 billion or more, the sources said.

India was the eighth-largest trading partner of China in Asia region with which the communist giant had a total trade worth $597.12 billion during January-November period.

Japan continued to be China's largest trading partner with total trade touching $151.50 billion, up 26.4%.

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China was the second biggest trading partner of Beijing with bilateral trade amounting to $99.87 billion, up 28.8%.

South Korea was China's third biggest trading partner with total trade amounting to US$81.35 billion, up 44.7%, according to figures released by the General Administration of Customs of China.
