Export of Chinese-branded cars encouraged

BEIJING - China's Ministry of Commerce will adopt measures to encourage Chinese auto enterprises to export vehicles with Chinese brand names to the international market.

Vice-Minister of Commerce Wei Jianguo stressed that the export of complete vehicles, and auto parts and fittings, especially the batch export of cars, reflects the industrial and technological development level and comprehensive competitive strength of a country. According to Wei, auto trade makes up 10% of the world's total trade volume. It is estimated that the world's total trade volume of auto products will top US$1.2 trillion by 2010. China's export of automobiles and parts and fittings has grown rapidly in recent years. It was US$8.16 billion in 2004, making up only 0.7% of the world's total.

China's target is to raise the proportion of China's export of auto products to 10% of the world total in 10 years, which means over US$120 billion of exports a year, said Wei.

The Ministry of Commerce plans to construct a national export base for vehicles and auto parts, and to offer financial and export credit support to big export enterprises.
