Beijing sets goals for local pharma
industry
BEIJING - Beijing
will strive to become No 5 nationally in terms of
sales revenue in the pharmaceutical industry, No 1
in the sales of medical apparatus and No 3 in
biomedicine by the year 2010, officials have
decided. To attain these goals, the city will
concentrate its efforts on chemical medicine,
Chinese medicine, medical apparatuses and
biomedicine.
In chemical medicine,
priority will be given to research and development
(R&D) of lead compounds, the development of
such modern drug making technologies as
slow-release, controlled release and targeting
technologies, and the development of advanced new
drugs for treating cardiovascular diseases,
cancer, diabetes, immune system disorders,
nephrosis and hepatitis.
In traditional
Chinese medicine (TCM), emphasis will be put on
the development of quality inspection and
certification technology; abstraction, separation,
refining and micronizing technologies; computer
control and engineering of technological
processes; active element screening; and
slow-release, skin-penetrating and targeting
technologies.
Priority for R&D on
medical apparatus production will be given to
digital medical instruments, digital X-ray
machines, digital ultrasonic diagnosing
instruments, magnetic resonance imaging equipment,
medical linear accelerators, high-grade microwave
and radio frequency therapeutic instruments, and
biochemical testing instruments.
Lastly,
the biomedical industry will focus on R&D for
mass production of bio-information, bio-chip and
gene therapeutic technologies, and development of
such products as bio-chips for diagnosis, cell
immunization drugs, monoclonal antibody diagnostic
agents, and genetically engineered drugs and
vaccines.
The city will help develop two
large medical groups, each with an annual sales
revenue of more than 10 billion yuan (US$1.2
billion), five large medical groups each with an
annual sales revenue of two billion yuan, and 10
groups with an annual sales revenue of one billion
yuan.
