Digital cable TV developing steadily in China

TAIYUAN - China's digital cable TV business has been developing stably in the last three years, with 122 pay television channels ratified by the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, and more than one million digital cable TV users.

According to Zhang Haitao, vice-director of the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, China has launched cable TV to digital cable TV upgrade tests in 49 areas since 2003. By now, the upgrade of 600,000 users in Qingdao has been

ended, with that in Foshan and Hangzhou to be completed by the end of this year and the Shenzhen upgrade to be completed at the beginning of 2006. The number of users involved in the upgrade tests in Dalian, Taiyuan and Mianyang has exceeded 100,000.

Zhan revealed that China would implement monopoly policies, pay service with low handling charges, and price the business in accordance to the development of local economies. According to industry insiders, traditional TV users can receive digital cable TV programs by simply installing a digital set-top box, without upgrading their cable TV circuit or TV set.
