Coal chemical production equipment sought

SHENYANG - Developing the technology to build complete sets of production equipment for the coal chemical industry has been listed as one of the country's 16 key technologies to be developed in the next few years. Zhang Guobao, vice-minister in charge of China's State Development and Reform Commission, made the remarks at the 2005 China Equipment Manufacturing Forum held recently in Shenyang, capital of northeast China's Liaoning Province.

In light of China's energy needs and surging oil prices, there exists a huge potential for the development of coal liquefaction, a process for producing gasoline and diesel fuel from coal, which

China has in abundance. However, the ability to produce the relevant technical equipment locally is the key to reducing the investment required for coal-to-oil production.

At present, the central government has approved a coal-to-oil project with an annual consumption of five million tons of coal to be undertaken by China Shenhua Group in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. So far, the manufacturing of large hydroreactor for the project has been made locally, but a number of high-pressure units used in the process still need to be imported, according to Zhang.
