China questions quality of Japanese cameras

TOKYO - Two digital cameras produced by Japan's Pentax Corporation have been included on a list of 13 cameras that Chinese authorities have cited for quality flaws, it was learned December 16.

Six Sony Corporation digital cameras are also on the list, which was prepared by China's Zhejiang provincial government. The 13 digital cameras are among 34 that the regional government

inspected for possible quality problems. The five other digital cameras listed have yet to be identified.

"We've been notified through our sales agents about two of our products having been assigned a failing grade," said an official at Pentax's investor and public relations division. The products in question are manufactured in China and the Philippines.

Pentax said that it subjects its digital cameras to proprietary tests and that they should meet the required criteria. Its request that the Zhejiang government retest the cameras has been accepted, according to Pentax.

On December 15, Sony suspended sales in China of six locally produced Cyber-shot digital cameras. The company asserts, however, that the digital cameras are produced to the same quality standards as those sold in Japan.

Details about the remaining seven digital camera models have yet to be disclosed. Products made by such firms as Canon Inc and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co were among those to be inspected. But Canon says that it has not been notified as to whether its own products were among the digital cameras that failed Zhejiang's quality tests. Matsushita Electric also stated that it has yet to receive any orders to halt sales.
