Six major energy projects planned

TAIYUAN - China plans to undertake six major energy production projects during the 2006-2010 period, namely:

1. Ten coal production bases. A group of highly efficient large coal mining areas will be built. The annual production capacity of coal will be increased by 310 million tons in the period, with annual output reaching 2.07 billion tons and liquefied coal production capacity hitting six million tons.

2. Oil and natural gas safe-supply and strategic storage project. This project will include offshore and onshore oil and gas exploration projects; large oil refineries; petrochemical projects; natural gas, crude oil, and liquefied natural gas pipeline projects;

and a strategic oil reserve project. Annual oil output is expected to reach 190 million tons by 2010; oil refining capacity to hit 350 million tons; ethylene production capacity to hit 14 million tons; and natural gas supply capacity to reach 100 billion cubic meters.
3. Western China energy base and electricity transmission project. The power sources for this project include various hydroelectric power stations and coal-fired power stations in the provinces of Shanxi and Shaanxi, and the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The power transmission capacity to the eastern part of the country will reach 48-50 million kilowatts (kW) by 2010.

4. Supportive power source and power grid projects for east China. Projects will include coal-fired power plants, natural gas power plants and large pump storage power plants.

5. One million kW of nuclear power plants. Some nuclear power plants will be built in East China's coastal areas.

6. New energy experimental and development projects. Large wind power plants and solar energy power installations will be built.
