Nissan aims to sell 200,000 vehicles in '06

GUANGZHOU - Dongfeng Nissan Passenger Vehicle Co announced February 28 that it aims to sell at least 200,000 cars in China in 2006, up more than 30% from the previous year.

The joint venture between Japan's Nissan Motor Co and China's Dongfeng Motor also fired up engine production that day at a Guangzhou plant that will be capable of turning out 360,000 units

annually. The engines will be installed in the Tiida subcompact and the Bluebird Slyphy, a new model slated for production this fall.

With a research center soon to open at the facility as well, Dongfeng Nissan is bringing together key automaking operations to facilitate local production.

And as part of its efforts to reach 300,000 vehicle sales in 2007, the firm announced plans to invest 600 million yuan (US$74.6 million) to boost its annual capacity from the current 150,000 vehicles per year to 270,000. The carmaker also said it will add 50 dealerships by the end of the year, bringing its total network to 250.

Sales of the Tiida and Tiana luxury sedan have been strong in China, with Dongfeng Nissan's 2005 sales in the country surging 160% to roughly 157,000 units.
