China plans 28 feeder airports by 2010

CHENGDU - China has decided to give priority to the transformation of airports in Chengdu, Xi'an, Kunming and Urumqi, capital cities of some provinces and autonomous regions in western China, in the coming five years.

Under the plan, it will construct 28 feeder line airports, and upgrade 27 existing trunk and feeder line airports in western China. Shi Boli, vice director of the Policy and Regulation Department of the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC),

said that China will focus on feeder line airport construction in the 11th Five-Year Program period (2006-2010), and will announce and improve the airport investment policy and increase the density of airports in western China.

Industry insiders predict that the passenger and cargo handling capacity of airports in western China will grow 8% and 12% in the coming five years and the number of airplanes flying feeder lines will increase by about 40. Du Falin, vice director of the Southwest China Bureau of the CAAC, called on foreign investors to join in the construction of airports in southwest China.
