China requires compulsory certification for toys

BEIJING - Six categories of toy products, namely prams, electric toys, plastic cement toys, metallic toys, bullet-shooting toys and toys for babies will be prohibited from being sold, imported or used in other operational activities in China as of June 1, 2007 if they fail to pass compulsory commodity certification and are not labeled with China's compulsory certification mark.

China's toy industry has developed rapidly in recent years to form an annual output value of over 100 billion yuan (US$12.5 billion).

China is a leading toy producer and consumer. There are now some 6,000 toy and toy parts manufacturing enterprises in China.

However, the quality of toys has been unsatisfactory, with only 74.4% of products meeting standards, according to the results of a recent survey by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.

China began to implement a compulsory commodity certification system on December 7, 2001. So far, the system has been implemented on 158 kinds of products in 22 categories.
