BEIJING - Sales of
Mercedes-Benz brand vehicles on the Chinese market
(including Hong Kong) surged 64% year-on-year to a
record 2,700 units in January, according to
Daimler Chrysler's Mercedes Car Group.
Klaus Maier, president of Mercedes-Benz
China, said sales growth in China was led by
sustained strong demand for the S-class models,
positive market response to the sport-utility
vehicles and the new generation of E-class models
that just rolled off the assembly line in Beijing.
The president vowed to introduce more
models to the Chinese
market to satisfy the
different needs of Chinese customers. The company
said the sale of its S-class models in China
exceeded 1,100 units in January.
On the
whole, the output and sales of motor vehicles in
China both surpassed 700,000 units in January.
Although there was a slight decline last
December, vehicle sales in the country are
continuing to grow rapidly, according to the China
Association of Automobile Manufacturers.
Specifically, the country produced 761,900 units
of vehicles in the month, a month-on-month rise of
12.6% and a year-on-year rise of 45.03%.
Sales in the month reached 717,100 units,
a month-on-month drop of 5.47%, but a year-on-year
rise of 34.27%.
China's domestic auto
makers sold 414,500 cars in January, down 2.05%
from the previous month, but up 39.05 % from the
same month last year.
Chinese indigenous
brands accounted for 30.57% of the sales, with
126,700 units sold last month. Japanese brands
ranked second with a market share of 25.90%, while
German and US brands followed with a combined
share of over 30%.
In terms of vehicle
type, the growth of the output and sales of
passenger vehicles is still higher than that of
commercial vehicles. The output of basic cars and
cross-type passenger vehicles maintained steady
growth.
Except for cross-type passenger
vehicles, other kinds of passenger vehicles have
witnessed declines in sales, especially MPVs.
Compared with last December, Guangzhou
Auto, Harbin Hafei Auto and Brilliance Auto in
January saw definite growth in sales, while others
suffered declines.
