TOKYO - Hitachi Medical
Corp announced on Wednesday that it will start basic
research into tooth regeneration with five Japanese
universities.
The company has launched a
consortium on tooth germ regeneration, in which Nagoya
University, Niigata University, Osaka University, the
University of Tokushima and Kanagawa Dental College have
decided to participate. The participants will each
handle one aspect of the research, such as regenerating
tissue around teeth or assessing the tissues of
regenerated teeth.
During the research, the
participants will first identify which stem cells will
grow into tooth germ. Then they will cultivate these
cells and supply them to dentists. By transplanting the
cells into patients, they aim to enable the growth of a
third set of natural teeth, following baby teeth and
permanent teeth.
