Nintendo Japan to set up firm in S Korea

SEOUL - Video game manufacturer Nintendo Japan said Thursday that it will establish a local affiliate in South Korea to expand its market presence here.

The decision by Nintendo's board of directors calls for a local firm to be set up on July 7. The new company will be wholly owned by the parent group on an investment of 25 billion won (US$26 million).

The Japanese company plans to use the local firm in Seoul to

help expand sales of such products as its portable Nintendo DS (NDS) and other game products.

In the past Daiwon CI, a local game company, acted as its sales agent, but because it was only a distributor, consumer complaints have mounted over its after-sales warranty service. Some Nintendo products do not come with software that allows users to play the game in Korean.

Nintendo is one of the world's top three game makers along with Sony and Microsoft.

The latest decision reflects Nintendo's confidence that the NDS will find buyers in South Korea. Some 16 million units of the console have been sold since it was released in late 2004.
