LAHORE - Pakistan's
federal minister for petroleum and natural resources,
Naurez Shakoor, has said that India has agreed to be
part of the proposed Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline project.
He said the government was currently in
negotiations with Iran.
The project was
discussed by Indian Foreign Minister Natwar Singh during
his recent visit to Pakistan. Singh said India was
interested in joining the project.
Concerning
the recent increase in the gas tariffs, the minister
said it was in no way a financial burden on people, and
added that the increase was just Rs 5 (US$0.10) for Rs
100, which is "peanuts".
However, he pointed out
that if a big discovery of gas reservoirs was made in
the country, the government might withdraw the increase
and pass the benefits on to consumers.
