Texas not content with 3rd place in Vietnam

HANOI - Texas is determined to be the US's number one investor state in Vietnam, its secretary of state, Geoff Connor, has said.

Connor, who came to Vietnam on August 13 with a delegation that included representatives of 22 leading companies, was speaking at a seminar on opportunities for developing trade and investment cooperation between Texas and Vietnam.

He told the meeting that Vietnam was becoming an important economic partner for his state. While just a few years ago, no Vietnamese goods could be found on Texas' list of imports, the country now ranks 56th in a list of exporters to the state, Connor said.

Connor also told the seminar that the state has several advantages in developing trade and investment cooperation with Vietnam. Texas has many industries with a great potential to invest in Vietnam, he said, including chemicals and allied products, petroleum and coal products, food and foodstuffs, industrial machinery and equipment, electronics and electric equipment, fabricated metal products and transportation equipment.

The state also has a large Vietnamese community and Texas University has a large center for Vietnamese studies, he pointed out.

Connor told the meeting that the state would regularly organize visits by business delegations to Vietnam.

Texas is now the United States' third-largest state investor in Vietnam, after Washington and California.
