Textile groups demand protection from China

JAKARTA - The Indonesian Textile Association (API) has asked the Indonesian Trade Protection Committee (KPPI) to impose safeguards against the influx of Chinese garment products into the domestic market.

API general chairman Benny Soetrisno claimed large imports of cheap garments from China have injured the local industry.

Soetrisno said that the API has not finished calculating the extend of domestic losses but the seriousness of the damage

was reflected in the collapse of home and small industries in Jakarta, Klaten and other cities in the past five years.

"We are not just following the lead of the European Union, the United States, Turkey and Argentina, which have already imposed safeguard measures against China," he said.

He said safeguard measures are allowed by the World Trade Organization as the occurrence of illegal garment imports is increasing.
