Medical tourists welcome

CEBU CITY - A US-based hospital is expanding in Cebu to build the country's first medical facility catering to local and foreign medical tourists.

"The Cardiovascular Hospitals of America (CHA) will construct a P1 billion (US$18.8 million) medical facility for Cebu," Dr Philip Chua said at a health and wellness forum held at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino.

CHA, which has four hospitals in the United States, will call the "state-of-the-art" medical center the American Specialty Hospital in Cebu.

Cebu was chosen as one of the sites for the hospital's first Far

East operation, Chua said.

Chua, who also serves as CHA's vice president for Far East Operations, said the American corporation is also looking at other areas within Cebu City.

Moreover, the Cebu facility will be accredited by the Joint Commission International, which honors international health care insurance from the United States.

"This health care coverage is expected to entice millions of overseas Filipinos or balikbayans and foreigners to retire in the Philippines," he said.

Chua cited Cebu as a prospective paradise for the multi-billion dollar medical tourism industry.

"Cebu has an enabling and attractive environment for both foreign and domestic investors, a requisite for medical tourism," said Chua.

He also stressed the huge potential of the province to become the modern-day health care mecca in the Far East.
