Cartoonist, illustrator and children's book author Gavin Coates was born in
London in 1957. After arriving in Hong Kong in 1982 he worked for some years as
a landscape architect but is now better known for his editorial cartoons. He
makes a daily contribution to The Standard (formerly the Hong Kong iMail). His
cartoons were prizewinners in the 2002 and 2003 Human Rights Press Awards
organized by the Foreign Correspondents' Club, Hong Kong Journalists'
Association and Amnesty International. Gavin's first illustrated environmental
storybook for all children under the age of 125, The Last Nut , was
published in 1991. Since then he has visited numerous schools to read and sign
his books and take questions. You can find more information about Gavin's
