Japan aims to create 770,000 jobs by 2000
TOKYO - The government intends to create 770,000 jobs by 2000, officials said Friday at a meeting of the task force on industrial structure reform and employment. The move is aimed to counter a rapid increase in unemployment.
The task force, composed of all cabinet members and chaired by Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi, plans to create 100,000 jobs in the health and welfare sector, 180,000 in the information and communications division, 400,000 in the housing segment and 90,000 in the tourism sector.
To achieve the goal, the government will accelerate a 10-year welfare promotion plan for senior citizens, deregulate the communications and information industry, increase housing starts and take other measures.
Despite recent efforts by the government to stimulate the economy, employment has not improved. The unemployment rate in January stood at 4.4 percent, a record low for the third month in a row.
