Trade with China hit record highs in '99
TOKYO - Japan's trade with China hit record highs in 1999, with increases of more than 16 percent in both imports and exports on a dollar basis, the Japan External Trade Organization (Jetro) said on Wednesday.
The fledgling recovery of the Japanese economy helped expand bilateral trade, Jetro pointed out, adding that both imports and exports will remain on a growth path this year. Exports to China increased 16.5 percent on the year to $23.32 billion, the first rise in four years, thanks to exports of textiles, nonferrous metals and electronic parts like semiconductors.
Imports from China climbed 16.1 percent to $42.85 billion, the first increase in two years. Textiles increased for the first time in three years due to massive orders from Japan's large-scale clothing retailers. Office equipment including personal computers also rose by more than 20 percent.
Imports and exports together were worth $66.17 billion, rebounding above the $60 billion level for the first time in two years.
China is now the third largest market for Japanese goods - up from fourth place in 1998 - and also Japan's second largest exporter. The trade deficit with China totaled $19.52 billion, the largest among Japan's trading partners.
