Inflation in S. Korea slightly up in April
SEOUL - Inflation in South Korea rose only 0.3 percent in April from March, despite increases in international oil prices and those of farm and fishery products, the Finance and Economy Ministry said Friday.
Consumer prices in April, however, moved up 0.4 percent compared to that in the same month last year and 0.8 percent from the end of December.
The April increase brought the total consumer price rise in the first four months to 0.7 percent on average year-on-year, the ministry said, adding that it will have no trouble holding the rate down to the projected 3 percent for this year.
The ministry cited stable increases in a number of key areas including wages, the won's appreciation against the U.S. dollar and stable raw material prices for the relative low rise in inflation.
By sector, prices of farm and fishery products were up 0.3 percent from March, those of apples 12.7 percent, green peppers 57.4 percent, strawberries 28.9 percent, tomatoes 29 percent and mackerel 9 percent.
By industrial product, the price of gasoline jumped 2.3 percent from March, followed by 5.6 percent for kerosene, 32.7 percent for cellular phones and 1.6 percent for medium-size sedans for an overall average of 0.4 percent.
Public service charges remained the same as in the previous month, although private service fees and housing rents moved up0.2 percent and 0.4 percent, respectively.
Meanwhile, the producer price index rose 0.3 percent in April from March, but was up 4.1 percent from a year ago.
