US President-elect Donald Trump has said the United States may not necessarily stick to its long-standing position that Taiwan is part of “one China,” calling into doubt nearly four decades of policy in a move likely to antagonize Beijing. China’s nationalistic Global Times newspaper commented that Trump is as “ignorant of diplomacy as a child.”

China should set its GDP growth target at around 6.5% for 2017, the country’s State Information Center has said. That target, writes Lin Wanxia, would be at the lower end of the 6.5% to 6.7% range set by Beijing for 2016. The think-tank said that it was likely real growth will exceed its recommended target.

Around 250,000 people gathered in front of Taiwan’s Presidential Office for a concert at the weekend, urging the government to legalize same-sex marriage. On Monday, however, the majority leader of the country’s Legislative Yuan, Ker Chien-ming, of the governing Democratic Progressive Party, said politicians remained sharply divided as to how to proceed with legislation.

Hong Kong’s Financial Secretary, John Tsang Chun-wah, has resigned his post pending an announcement that he will run for the city’s top job next March. The resignation ends months of speculation over the 65-year-old’s intentions.
